It’s the moment the Plurkosphere has been waiting for: news on the release of a desktop-based Plurk client. The applurkation is called Plurker and it’s being developed by a crack trio of Plurk fanatics.

Plurker, Your Life on Your Desktop

Keith Hanson, the original visionary for Plurker, made this statement about the client:

Plurker aims to bring much more organization to your Plurk timeline by allowing you to create windows that filter plurks using simple email like rules. This combined with many more features [will] make Plurker stand out above the rest.

The Interface

If you’ve been following Keith’s timeline, you may have already caught a glimpse of what the user interface might look like. He shared the first snapshot on July 2, which we’ve got to say we’re very impressed with so far.

The interface has three tabs at the top to handle your main functions, including search, friends and settings. The user’s karma score is displayed at top right and Plurks are displayed in vertical timeline, much like most microbloggers are used to seeing these days.

Each Plurk displays an avatar, the verb and message that was Plurked. A time and date stamp is included so you can easily monitor how old a message is. Each message also includes a mute link (to easily hide future notifications), an edit link, a pop out link (presumably to pop the Plurk out into its own window) and finally a reply counter in the corner.

At the bottom of the app is where all the magic happens. The user can easily select the verb they want to use, type in a message, keep track of how many characters are remaining and finally post the Plurk.

As with most prototype processes, it will be interesting to see how much of this design lives on into the full release. We imagine that it will look relatively the same, though a few minor tweaks here and there may be necessary.

When and Where Can I Download Plurker?

So far as we know, a release date has not yet been determined. Plurkular will keep you updated as we learn more.

How Do I Stay Current on What is Happening?

Keep checking in here at Plurkular and watch the Plurker Applurkation page. You can also follow the Plurker blog at http://blog.plurker.org.

We’re hoping to get our hands on Plurker once the team determines that its stable enough for testing. We also plan to bring you more info on Plurker stats and the story behind the app in the near future.

About the design… It’s already changed a bit, haha. But in a good way! We’re hoping to do a closed beta pretty soon :)

I’d like to share something that I’ve created for mobile web users of Plurk. It’s called Plurkified http://mediagrowl.com/plurkified
It tracks unread responses (which we do not see on Plurk’s mobile version :)

Windows only?? Sad. I was hoping for an Adobe Air app so it’d be cross platform. :(

I believe that Jacob Morse (the designer) said they would eventually release a Mac client programmed in Cocoa. However, Keith mentioned that he just wasn’t as familiar with it as he is with .NET.
